Ferrum Marched for Diversity

By Lindsey Foster

As Ferrum started the month of February, a series of activities for the Black History Month were also to launch. One event that stood out was the “Together We March” organized by Ferrum’s Student Government Association on Feb. 5.

“This march is for everyone on campus to come together as one,” junior and SGA President Kintwon Pettiford said.

Ferrum students, staff, and faculty first met at the Panther statue for this event. All participants walked to the chapel while chanting. At the chapel, the SGA’s ceremony then began with  junior LaShawna Scott singing two selections, including “You Have Won the Victory/Victory belongs to Jesus mashup” and “Lift Every Voice.” James Pennix, the former Vice President of Enrollment Management of Ferrum College, also spoke at the ceremony.

The “Together We March” event was initiated by Ferrum College’s sophomore class officers last year, which seeks to promote a feeling of unity and inclusion that extends beyond the Black History Month.

“We are trying to make everyone feel included here at Ferrum because it’s like a family here,” said junior and SGA Vice President of Legislation Lauren Ries, “and we want everyone to have the best experience they can have!”
