During the first quarter, junior Titus Jones made a five-yard touchdown run. This put Ferrum on the board and started with a lead of 7-0. Guilford quickly scored with a two-yard touchdown run by Cam Hutchinson. The Quakers then tried to score another point after this - called a point after attempt - but failed, still falling short against Ferrum with a score of 6-7.
To enlarge Ferrum’s lead, freshman Zeb Dyer threw the first of his three touchdown passes of the night, which was a 12-yard strike to senior Tyler English. Soon after Ferrum’s lead of 13-6, Jones made a pass to freshman Tmahdae Penn, who then made a 29-yard touchdown pass. Guilford then scored a 20-yard pass play with 2:49 left in the second quarter. At halftime, the Panthers continued to lead with a score of 21-12.
“There was a moment just after half when we were up by nine. I told the guys these are the moments when teams have to make a choice,” said Head Coach Cleive Adams during the Ferrum Athletics’ “Behind the Whistle” segment. “Proud of the players and coaches!”
The second half of the game was all Ferrum. Dyer came back and made two more touchdown passes, including a 13-yard pass to Penn and 2-yard pass to senior Zac Saalweachter. Senior DJ Baylor also scooped up a Guilford fumble and rumbled 18 yards to the endzone. Senior Jack Sheehan then scored five PATs, concluding the game with a win for the Panthers.
“I felt like we finally played a whole game,” Saalweachter said, “We shot ourselves in the foot a few times in the first half, but came out in the second half.”
With this win, the Panthers will play in ODAC for week #6 games. The location of the game was changed from Adams Stadium to Hampden-Sydney College, where the Panthers will play against the Tigers at 1:00 p.m on Apr. 3, 2021.
